Jeff Staple’s larger-than-life pigeon sculpture — a creature that has journeyed far beyond the literal 17-hour flight from New York to Shanghai — now resides within the brand’s first flagship store in Asia. Peeking from a red custom-designed “pigeon-house” façade, the bird looks as though it has pecked its way into the very rhythm of the City of Magic.

Long a symbol of New York’s raw, unyielding street sensibility, the ubiquitous avian now threads that gritty spirit into the high-velocity urbanity of one of China’s largest megacities. Supersized and jarringly hyperreal, the sculpture transforms the Staple Pigeon retail environment from a mere point of purchase into an immersive, atmospheric encounter. It is an unmistakable point of magnetism, proving that even the most overlooked urban symbols can become icons when viewed through a curatorial lens.

The Architecture of the Avian

The arrival of Sir Staple Pigeon in Shanghai was not a matter of simple logistics, but a feat of design engineering. The sculpture was conceived and realized by Design at Present (DAP) Studio in a collaboration with the Acrostar team in Beijing. Known for their work in biologically accurate paleontological models, Acrostar brought a level of life-like anatomical precision, usually reserved for museum-grade dinosaur reconstructions, to the project.

Anatomy of a 3D Legend

From the first digital sketch to the final installation, the project required an intensive eight months to complete. The creation process was a masterclass in modern fabrication, beginning with a detailed 3D rendering of the urban bird. Every aspect of the pigeon’s form was scrutinized, including the tension in its posture, its subtle musculature, and the complex interlocking structure of its feathers.

Color was the next frontier. Moving away from flat greys, the team opted for a palette derived through close observation of living species. They mapped the natural gradation of tones that many city-dwellers ignore:

Iridescence: Capturing the shifting teals and purples along the neck.
Layering: Building out the blue-grey foundations and the warm, sunlit browns that define the wings.
Cosmic Eye: Focusing on the almost supernatural tones within the iris, which serve as the sculpture’s focal point.

Materials and Mastery

To ensure the pigeon could withstand the humidity and UV exposure of the Shanghai streetscape, the team used a high-grade blend of resin and fiberglass. The sculpture was 3D printed in multiple, high-resolution sections before being painstakingly assembled. This modular approach allowed the team to render microscopic details — individual barbs on feathers and the rough texture of the feet — ensuring a foundation of absolute realism before a single drop of paint touched it.

Painting the piece was an analog labor of love. The surface was spray-painted in successive translucent layers to build depth. Each individual feather was then articulated by hand, ensuring that no two areas of the bird felt identical. The eyes, crafted from photosensitive resin, were painted in isolation to achieve a glass-like depth that creates an eerie sense of consciousness.

Glistening eyes, formed from high-clarity photosensitive resin, reveal the meticulous care behind the print. Every 3D-printed striation is rendered with a precision that pushes past mere manufacturing and into the realm of hyperrealism — capturing a depth that feels both digital and undeniably human.

A Symbol Recontextualized

Once completed, the massive figure was transported by truck from Beijing to Shanghai for its final installation. Now presiding over the Huangpu district, the Staple Pigeon serves as a thread between two of the world’s most influential urban centers.

By taking a creature often dismissed as a “rat with wings” and treating it with the reverence of a paleontological discovery, Staple and DAP Studio have created a grand-scale work of art.
